Keeping Rabbits Cool
Rabbit are at risk for heat stroke, and death, when temperatures go above 80 degrees fahrenheit. Here are tips for keeping bunny cool in hot weather:
  • Put ice cubes in their water, and give them a cold snack, like refrigerated greens.
  • Make frozen herb cubes by putting cilantro or other veggies/herbs in ice tray before freezing.
  • Put a frozen water bottle on the edge of a ceramic tile. The tiles stay cool for quite awhile.
  • Ceramic tiles or marble are much cooler than other types of flooring. A square or two would be a good place for bunny to rest.
  • Mist your rabbits' ears and fur with water.
  • Drape wet towel over rabbit's cage with fan blowing on it (make sure fan cord is covered!)
  • If you don't have air conditioning, a swamp cooler can lower the temperature in a small area by about 10 degrees.
  • Make a rabbit air-conditioner: http://www.3bunnies.org/bunnyAC.htm
Helpful tips if you've lost power and can't use air conditioning or frozen water bottles:
  • Ceramic tiles or marble are much cooler than other types of flooring. A square or two would be a good place for bunny to rest.
  • Mist your rabbits' ears and fur with water.
  • Put buns into an empty bathtub.
  • Purchase a battery-powered fan
  • Take rabbits outside and let them dig under a bush - wet down the ground to cool it off; Make sure the environment is bunny safe and your rabbit is contained.
  • Let bun rest on The Chilly Pad (monitor your rabbit to ensure s/he doesn't chew on it) http://www.froggtoggs.com/#cooling/
